THE PROJECT

Every two weeks, Pushpay’s designers would participate in a team meeting as well as an ever changing ‘design challenge.’ Taking the form of a design prompt, puzzle, or other brainstorming group activity, it was meant to inspire us in short sessions spanning 10 - 20 minutes each. One particular challenge was to create a foreign language app. For the app prompt, my team focused on English speakers wanting to learn Korean as a second language. I chose to continue working on this project even after our initial brainstorming session.

APP USERS

My team initially had a target audience of school-age children, or young adults. However, the reasons for learning a second language can be as diverse as its users, thus I expanded the app user base.

SITEMAP

Sketching out a sitemap is part of my preliminary design process.

The first screen upon installation would be the ‘Language Selector,’ similar to competitor apps. ‘Lessons’ would be the app’s home screen for users, providing an easy starting point. Users could save and revisit content under ‘Favourites.’ The ‘Connect’ screen would provide a penpal portal and Kakao portal. Both features served the purpose of facilitating cultural exchange with the user and native speakers in South Korea. Under the ‘Profile’ screen, users would be able to see their score, redeem rewards, change settings, or donate to the app’s development team.
